The Oil and Gas Institute is a research and
development unit, subordinated to the Ministry of Economy, working for
the benefit of petroleum and natural gas industries.
Drawing on tradition and accomplishments of the
entities from which it came into existence, the Institute has
considerable scientific achievements and numerous research solutions
implemented in oil field exploration and development, natural gas
industry, and petroleum and petrochemical industry.
The register of documentation developed in the
Institute makes a long and diverse list, which includes expert
opinions, monographs on solutions of design and technology problems,
significant comprehensive works which contributed to discovering new
deposits of petroleum and natural gas, manufacturing and using tools
allowing their exploitation and implementation of technologies
necessary for cleaning, transport, processing and use. Owing to the
participation in spectacular successes and worked out on the quiet
elements of the everyday practice within the industry, the Institute
has gained the wide recognition in it and enjoyed a good reputation of
the supervising body.
The employees of the Institute published many highly
valued monographs, publications, papers and educational materials
useful to the trade. Thanks to their knowledge and experience, they
are members of a number of scientific and technical organizations and
the domestic and international advisory committees, working as
academic teachers on in-service training courses, and sharing their
skills with young people while conducting the student training. Twenty
five percent of researchers of the Institute have professional and
academic degrees or titles and every year this number is increasing,
thanks to reward with success procedures for doctoral and postdoctoral
degrees. Qualifications of the staff and the entirety of scientific
and application activity provided the Institute with the highest,
first category in the ranking of the scientific units conducted by the
Ministry of Science and Higher Education. To the success contributed
also a publishing activity: own, popular in the industry magazine "
Oil-Gas", book series " INiG Works", and periodical publications as
scientific-technical guides for the industry. The imposing research
achievements of the Institute staff were also confirmed with many
patent applications - till 2008 the Institute obtained 899 patents,
including 10 foreign patent rights, 145 rights of protection of
domestic utility models and 17 rights relating to the Polish
trademarks registration.
The directions of the substantive activity of the
Institute have become a significant part of the domestic and European
policy of the sustainable development of power industry:
-
evaluation of prospecting forecasts of oil and
natural gas with methods of geology, geophysics, geochemistry and
microbiology,
-
exploration and exploitation of deposits of
hydrocarbons,
-
storage, transport, distribution and use of the
natural gas, crude oil and petroleum products,
-
petroleum processing,
-
improving and monitoring of the petroleum product
quality,
-
using the renewable sources of energy,
-
environmental protection in the oil and gas
industry.
Good, constantly supplemented research infrastructure:
modern apparatuses, including the unique analysers, equipment allowing
to conduct laboratory and field tests, the rich collection of a
library, and buildings and technological halls in Krakow, Krosno and
Warsaw, permits the Institute to create the interesting and diverse
offer of scientific, research and development, and service works for
the industry, including small and medium enterprises, as well as for
the involvement in research projects, carried out by scientific
consortiums.
The efforts of the Institute, made in order to
deserve for good references, brought expected results, such as:
-
entrusting the Institute with the supervision of the utilization
of EU funds allocated for the development of the Polish energy
infrastructure, being a token of the authorities appreciation,
-
certificates of the quality system according to
PN-EN ISO 9001: 2000 and accreditation of the majority of
laboratories according to PN-EN ISO 17025: 2005, confirming the
correctness of the resource management and the reliability of
performing works commissioned to the Institute,
-
notification in the European Union, authorizing the
Institute to conduct conformity assessment procedures for products
and devices, which work in the area of its specialization,
-
the entitlement (in the form of accreditation and
the notification) to carry out certification of products, quality
systems and the compliance with Polish Standards, granted to the
Certification Office, being a part of the Institute
-
the right of the Department of Technical Approvals
to give approvals for building products applied in gas grids and
utilities

The standardization activity in the field of the oil
mining, the gas engineering and petroleum products of the
long-standing tradition, permits the Institute to support the Polish
Committee for Standardization in performing his duty and to manage of
the secretary's offices of national Technical Committees in these
fields.
Participation in projects of the fourth, fifth, and
sixth framework programme of research and development of the
Technology of the European Union and in bilateral projects with
European partners, as Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Switzerland, Norway,
France and overseas countries such as the USA, Australia constitutes
the valuable recommendation for the international cooperation.
Multidisciplinary character of works, the research
potential, qualifications and experience in the pure and applied
research gives the Institute legitimization to assist decision-making
processes of the state in the field of power industry, to involve in
domestic and international scientific and developmental projects, and
to fulfil the role of the scientific partner and the expert for the
oil and gas industry.
